I love the open source movement myself, but one thing I always find people underestimate is that time spent should be part of the calculation and personal ROI if it makes sense for them.ĭon't get me wrong, it's not a fit for everyone (I wouldn't have my parents setup unraid from scratch, but if I was to hand my dad a box if he needed it, he'd be fine.) And it's not necessarily for people who have never built or modified a computer, etc. Unlike 'just download ubuntu' which while yes is free/open source, can be complex for many people and getting each bit and piece that is basically built and packaged into unraid with a dedicated support forum and lots of youtube videos behind it for example. just add drives, or cycle in other hardware, etc. I hated the price tag but not the rest of the packageīecause (to me) it's like have synology like experience (and more) without the price tag, wasted HW, HW lock in and don't need to buy two more synology's. I got myself 2 more Synology nas after being pleased with my first. Just download Ubuntu and save that money for hardware. Honestly I don't understand people forking hundreds of dollars for what is essentially a Linux-like os.
